Christopher Barber, a native of upstate New York, lives and works in Vienna. While studying classical guitar at the State University of New York, he was already performing in a wide range of musical contexts, ranging from rock and pop to folk and new acoustic. In Europe the scope of his interests expanded to include early music, whereby an exploration of jazz begun in the USA would increasingly become the focus of his work in varied ensemble settings. Within this stylistic diversity, Barber has remained committed to developing his own compositional voice, open to the freedom and emotional intensity of improvisation and yet emphasizing the structural. Recently he has concentrated as a soloist on performing and recording his own works, finding in the intimacy of the nylon-string guitar the perfect vehicle for his highly individual sound.
